Hypersomnia Due to a Medication or Substance

Diagnosis

Three criteria must be met for a diagnosis of hypersomnia due to a medication or substance to be made.

  • The person has daily periods of uncontrollable sleepiness or falling asleep.
  • The daytime sleepiness is caused by a medication or substance that the person is currently taking or is the result of stopping a wake-promoting medication or substance.
  • No other untreated sleep, medical, psychiatric, or neurologic disorder better explains the symptoms.
